The Birds in the Wall
Lucy holds up a split holopad in the middle of an argument: on one side the play-dance page from book 7, thick with birds, on the other the render frame with four. The book has 12 birds and the studio can show 4. Barrow has a fix ready — show 4 twice — and Lucy shoots it down flat, because the engine renders them as strangers. Mara comes through the door with the print run and the problem gets heavier: she printed 12 birds in 5 languages, and Barrow's defence that he wrote a mood, not a census, does not survive the page she holds out to him. Nobody counts birds, he says. The page does, says Mara. In the workroom Rick has already solved it his own way, the cut birds half-painted into the scenery behind the dance, and he is proud of the logic — wallpaper cannot duplicate itself — even when Mara points out the cast is wallpaper now. Then Lara arrives with the render finding and the quota turns out not to have held either: they asked for 4 birds and got 7, and 3 of them share 1 wing. Barrow tightens his solution around himself — he will rewrite the dance, 4 birds always — and takes Lucy as witness to Mara's office to announce he is amending the book. Mara waits a beat: it is printed, on paper, in 5 languages. Ah, says Barrow. At the console wall Andrea puts up a new counter, books left to adapt, and Charles cannot let a number past him: book 7 is in render, so it is 1, not 2. Lucy asks what comes after 7, and Andrea does not answer; she looks down at her red holopad instead, because the verdict came back and the book is the book. Last shot: Rick holds up the finished plate, the meadow fully painted and thick with birds, baked into the wall for good. Barrow asks if they are happy there. They are paint, says Rick. Part one of the ten-part "Two Books Left" run. Featuring Lucy, Barrow, Mara, Rick, Lara, Charles, Andrea and Mimo. Cast unchanged, nine.
